Sedimentary Geology and Paleontology
The Sedimentary Geology and Paleontology research line emerged from growing efforts and their results, reflected in publications and national and international partnerships. Its focus encompasses cutting-edge topics as diverse as Pre-Salt energy resources, climate change, and the protection of natural heritage, though it is not limited to these subjects. The presence of the Araripe Basin in Ceará, with its exceptionally rich Cretaceous fossil assemblage and its world-class UNESCO Geopark, combined with the specialized faculty of PPGG-UFC, provides a favorable environment for research of broad interest.
This research line interacts with cross-disciplinary fields such as Remote Sensing (description and monitoring of recent sedimentary processes, Quaternary Geology), Geostatistics (modeling hydrocarbon reservoirs and their petrophysical properties in sedimentary basins), and Geophysics (hydrocarbon reservoir modeling and subsurface data acquisition). It also connects with the program’s other research lines, Environmental Geology and Water Resources and Geodynamics and Mineral Resources, either through these cross-disciplinary areas or directly in studies where Sedimentary Geology plays a key role in prospecting for water, mineral, and energy resources, along with related themes.
